Alex Hospice Centre Receives 10 New Wheelchairs

Mobility isn’t as effortless for the aged and frail as it may be for most of us. While we’re able to make full use of our limbs to carry out even the simplest of daily tasks, the less fortunate don’t have access to such ambulatory services.

Ashraful Uloom in Marlboro, Johannesburg, teamed up with various other Muslim organisations in the area to collect funds and sponsor wheelchairs to those in need. The Alex Hospice and Rehab Centre were thankful beneficiaries of 10 new wheelchairs this October.

Patients at the centre who were in need of wheelchairs

Many of the patients admitted to the centre require the assistance of a wheelchair to move around, therefore this generous donation couldn’t have come sooner. Additional wheelchairs that are not currently needed will be stored away, ready for use when any new patients are admitted.

This was the first wheelchair sponsorship that Ashraful Uloom have been involved in, and they hope that it will only be the beginning of many more charitable collaborations.

Wheelchairs and gift bags that were donated

The patients were also recipients of gift bags that comprised of essential toiletries and a blanket. The ailing residents at the centre were overjoyed at acquiring such thoughtful gifts.

Angel in disguise, Grace Marutlulle founded the hospice

The centre, founded by the compassionate Grace Marutlulle in 2003, provides love, comfort and care for terminally-ill patients. Grace wanted to offer a safe and nurturing space for patients whose families were unable to take care of them anymore. Staff offer around-the-clock nursing care, accommodation, administrative services as well as nutritious meals for indisposed occupants. Alex Hospice and Rehab Centre is run only on donations received from good Samaritans. They have a full staff complement and volunteers are encouraged to help wherever possible.

Other local communities involved in this sponsorship include:

Wendywood Muslim Jamaat, Sandton Islamic Association, Sunninghill Islamic Jamaat, Linbro Park Islamic Association, Buccleuch Musjid Al Khaleel, Kelvin Residents Association and the Masjid and Imams National Advisory Council of South Africa (MINACSA).
